Recently, Chipotle Mexican Grill, a world-renowned restaurant chain, announced that it will deploy RFID tags in its stores around the world. Chipotle is now one of the first major restaurant companies to use RFID tags to track ingredients from suppliers to restaurants through serialization, improving food safety in their supply chains.

"RFID tags transform inventory management into an automated digital feature that optimizes restaurant operations and gives our restaurant service centers real-time access to inventory data," said Scott Boatwright, the company's chief restaurant officer. "This integrated technology is improving the way our restaurant employees work, while also benefiting our supply partners."

Chipotle has cooperated with global RFID technology leaders, including RFID software provider Mojix, Avery Dennison, one of the RFID inlay R&D companies, and RFID reader solution provider Zebra Technologies.

The company is committed to "integrity food" standards, purchasing more than 35 million pounds of locally grown products throughout 2021. It has spent more than $400 million of its food spending budget on quality ingredients over the past two years. The brand is now further increasing transparency on the direct origin of its ingredients and is working closely with Auburn University's RFID Lab to refine a pilot program that is being tested on meat, dairy and avocados from five Chipotle suppliers. When the food ingredients supplied by the suppliers participating in the test arrive at Chipotle restaurants every day, RFID-enabled tags must be posted on the outer packaging, and all of them must be scanned and inspected by the RFID reader. Store-deployed traceability systems are designed to enable companies to act quickly, efficiently and precisely on food safety and quality issues. At present, some suppliers have begun to implement the RFID technology required by Chipotle, which not only saves suppliers time in inventory management and inventory rotation, but also reduces irreversible errors caused by human error.

The restaurant chain invited the supply partners of the main ingredients to participate in the test, and provided the partners with a complete RFID solution, which included the introduction of RFID use standards and the advantages after use. The brand is also in its phased tests, listening to feedback from employees and suppliers before deciding how to use RFID tags.

"We have two years in the pipeline to complete the RFID program deployment and see this innovation as the next evolution in traceability and food safety," said Laurie Schalow, chief corporate affairs and food safety officer. "We are excited to test this innovation in the field with our suppliers and restaurants to enhance our robust traceability program.

Chipotle claims to have more than 2,950 restaurants in the U.S., Canada, U.K., France and Germany as of December 31, 2021, making it the only restaurant company of its size to own and operate all of its restaurants.
